Actually, it still can be considered one. It's 1am, and I just started my Chinese book report. And I have no idea why I'm blogging. Oh ya. I went to Evan's house for dinner. Basically we ate some stuff that I've never eaten before. And I thought about a few things on the way home, mainly how I didn't say more than 10 sentences for the whole duration, and the attitude of adults who are supposed to be much more mature than children. The first has to do with the second. I didn't speak a lot because 1: Our parents were talking in a mix of dialect and Chinese, and I can't understand dialect. 2: They were bitching about members and staff of our church. How am I supposed to talk in a topic like this? On a side note, Evan said about a sentence, so at least I tried. =D Ok. Now the second. You know how grown ups are more mature and all? I don't understand why they don't like someone who takes leave for rather valid reasons, when anyway the amount of days of paid leave is granted in the contract anyway.
Take for example one of the things I heard that made me look from my bowl incredulously. They were bitching about one of the staff who was really quite hardworking, but often takes leave (Well not often, but within her allotment of paid leave periods) because she has two children that need taking care of. So my mother was saying in a crude imitation of her "Oh, my son is sick and I have to take him to the doctor so I can't go today." But what she said later (to general agreement) was "It's okay like if you take leave to bring your child to the doctor, especially a young child like one below 10 years old." And the person they were bitching about, both of her children are below 10 years old. So.... I sense a contradiction.
Is this what we get for growing up in such a performance-oriented economy? That we must not claim MC and go to work even if we are sick? That we can't take leave or holidays? That we can't exercise any of the benefits of the job which is probably why we actually applied for it in the first place? That doing so will make us appear lazy, irresponsible and have lousy work ethic?
Maybe I misunderstood the situation due to the confusing mix of languages, maybe there was some things that I missed. Maybe it's ME who's not mature enough. Maybe I'll grow up to understand why this is a workplace faux pas.
Or maybe not.
